Sharks and witches and monkeys – oh my! On Friday, October 27, the Honors College hosted their annual poster “party” workshop for HNRS 110: Principles of Research and Inquiry first-year students. Organized by the Peer Mentors from HNRS 361: Lead Mentorship in Honors and HNRS 261: Peer Mentorship in Honors, the afternoon consisted of games and activities to assist students in preparation for presenting their research proposals at the Honors College Exhibition in December. The focus was on familiarizing the students with the style and layout of the posters and providing them with valuable tips for delivering effective presentations.
In addition to the activities centered around the HNRS 110 presentations, there were also games meant just for fun, like Charades, Pictionary, and Animal (Trivia) Crossing. The students had the opportunity to engage with Honors College peers from across classes and disciplines, many of whom will become essential parts of their academic journey. By incorporating both presentation-oriented activities and interactive games, the Poster Party struck a balance between academic preparation and social gathering making for a memorable and beneficial experience.
To add to the lively atmosphere of the Poster Party, students and mentors were invited to wear costumes in celebration of the Halloween weekend. Many students embraced the opportunity – arriving in costumes that reflected their interests, personalities, and creativity.
Nicole Struzinsky and Matthew Nguyen stood out with their fun costumes, earning special recognition from Dr. John Woolsey. Nicole as a witch and Matthew with an improvised costume using tape, both showcasing their creativity and resourcefulness.
