It lies within the organizations and activities on campus. While every story is different, Kim Laura’s story originates in the Honors College, which helped her in making Mason a home.  </p> <p>Throughout Kim Laura’s time at Mason, community has been a staple in shaping her college experience. From taking Principles of Research and Inquiry (HNRS 110) as a freshman to serving as the treasurer for <a href="https://mason360.gmu.edu/fgm/home/" target="_blank">F1rst Gen Maso</a>n, a student organization that connects first generation college students to one another and helpful resources, and the lead graphic design intern for the Honors College Communications Team, Laura has seen the power of the Mason community at work. </p> <p>Laura is a junior community health major with a concentration in clinical science. Beyond the classroom, Laura is involved with multiple organizations on campus, F1rst Gen Mason and the Honors College Communications Team, and it is this growing community that inspires her. In both teams she serves as an integral member of the executive board, helping to make the organizations thrive. </p> <p>Laura is a first-generation college student, and as she made the already difficult transition from high school to university life, she grappled with the struggle of knowing who to ask for help in this strange and unfamiliar place. </p> <p>However, this unfamiliarity did not last too long.  </p> <p>Laura discovered F1rst Gen Mason, a program that connects students who are the first in their family to attend college with students like them, faculty, and other resources to help them succeed. Laura started as just a member of this organization--guided by the Student Transition Empowerment Program (STEP), which aided her the summer before her first semester—but after her first year in the program, she wanted to be more involved in the leadership. </p> <div class="align-left"> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq301/files/styles/medium/public/2022-07/MicrosoftTeams-image%20%283%29_0.jpeg?itok=_lhMQxTL" width="560" height="560" alt="Kimberly Laura" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <p>Laura became the treasurer of First Gen Mason to help other students overcome the same anxiety that she once did, and to stay involved in the community. Laura recognized that other students faced the same problems, and more, as she did and wanted to be an integral part in their transition to college. </p> <p>Being a part of First Gen Mason brought Laura closer to other students like herself, and she remarks that the organization helped her embrace her identity as a first-generation student more. Mason’s clubs and organizations help many students like Laura get connected on campus, and make them feel at home. Laura felt this connection to other students similar to herself made college easier to navigate, as it provided her with both social and academic resources that helped her to succeed.  </p> <p>F1rst Gen Mason is not the only way Laura has cultivated a home for herself in the Honors College. As a member of the Honors College communications team, Laura feels she has grown closer to her Honors College peers. She has stayed connected to the Honors College outside of the classroom and enjoys using her graphic design talents to assist the college and its participants. </p> <p>Though Laura majors in community health, she found herself wanting to pursue her hobby in graphic design, and the Honors College communications team was the perfect way to do that.  </p> <p>Says Laura, “the Honors College community are ready and willing to help you throughout your academic journey.” As her first job, the Honors College gave her a strong foundation for her academic success. This team connected her to various Honors College staff and peers that care about her success and wellbeing and enhanced her community experience on campus. </p> <p>Laura’s community continues to grow and change as her time at Mason progresses. However, one thing is certain: she is supported wherever she goes. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/81" hreflang="en">Honors College</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1381" hreflang="en">first-generation</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 19 Jul 2022 14:24:46 +0000 Wasiq Muhammad Muhammad Ali 2216 at https://honorscollege.gmu.edu EIP Graduate Juan Escalera Gives Back to Mason Through Honors College Communications Team https://honorscollege.gmu.edu/news/2022-06/eip-graduate-juan-escalera-gives-back-mason-through-honors-college-communications-team <span>EIP Graduate Juan Escalera Gives Back to Mason Through Honors College Communications Team </span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/456" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="Wasiq Muhammad Muhammad Ali">Wasiq Muhammad…</span></span> <span>Wed, 06/01/2022 - 16:47</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><p>“I am always interested in learning something new, or even better, be[ing] told of something I did know but from a different perspective.” </p> <p>Juan Escalera, a senior Marketing and economics major, spoke these words as he thought back on his time in George Mason’s Honors College. With graduation on the horizon, the effect that the Honors College and all he has learned during his time in it has become more prominent. </p> <p>Escalera began his time in the Honors College in the EIP—the Early Identification Program. This program identifies promising first-generation college students while in middle and high school, and guides them through their college application process and their first steps into Mason.  </p> <p>Having benefitted from this program, Escalera decided to pay the experience forward. In fact, he returned to be employed by the same office that had guided him, working as the photographer for many of their events.  </p> <p>“Being able to give back and support the program directly has been a great opportunity and has allowed me work alongside familiar faces.” </p> <p>Moving forward with his time at Mason, Escalera soon enrolled in Multidisciplinary Practicum (HNRS 360), taught by instructor Mr. Richard Todd Stafford. During this class, he created an official marketing plan to help his employer. Using this plan, he analyzed analytics for the EIP’s social media posts, and conducted interviews with the intent of growing their social media presence.  </p> <p>From this experience, Escalera’s talent for social media marketing and photography was nurtured by his instructor, and following this project, Escalera was hired to the Honors College Communications Team by Stafford. Here, he now serves as the head social media intern for the team, teaching his peers and learning new aspects of communications work every day. He demonstrates to the team how to appropriately run various social media accounts and camera techniques—skills that are much appreciated by his peers. The Honors college provided him with a bridge between his professional and academic life, shaping Escalera into a well-rounded student during his time in college.  </p> <p>Escalera has always remarked that he loves to learn something new. From EIP to a future Honors College graduate, his passion for learning and appreciation for discovering something new has shaped his experience. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1401" hreflang="en">Students (14101)</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/956" hreflang="en">Early Identification Program (EIP)</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/81" hreflang="en">Honors College</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 01 Jun 2022 20:47:20 +0000 Wasiq Muhammad Muhammad Ali 2191 at https://honorscollege.gmu.edu Addressing Nonprofit Challenges: Honors College Connects Hosts Its First-ever Hackathon https://honorscollege.gmu.edu/news/2021-11/addressing-nonprofit-challenges-honors-college-connects-hosts-its-first-ever-hackathon <span>Addressing Nonprofit Challenges: Honors College Connects Hosts Its First-ever Hackathon</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/441" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Daniel Hyunbin Chung</span></span> <span>Tue, 11/16/2021 - 10:56</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><div class="align-left"> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq301/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2021-11/Hackathon-Full-Image.png?itok=oDa2RuMn" width="350" height="263" alt="The Nonprofit Hackathon was hosted on the morning of October 2nd, marking the fall semester with a revolutionary timestamp for its Honors College Connects students." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <p>Two dozen Honors College students and four hours on a Saturday is a recipe for great new ideas, as demonstrated at Honors College Connects’ first-ever Nonprofit Hackathon. This event brought three local and one international nonprofit into a space with motivated student volunteers, who participated in a rapid-fire guided challenge in human-centered design – making and testing rapid prototypes with an eye towards creating user-friendly ideas. Over the course of the day, the students bonded with each other, networked with their nonprofit partner, addressed challenges with brilliant creativity, and had fun giving back to the community. </p> <p> <a href="https://honorscollege.gmu.edu/connect/community-partnerships/honors-college-connects">Honors College Connects (HCC)</a> is a student-led program that connects students with local nonprofits, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and develop leadership skills. According to HCC student leader Elizabeth Fortson, the main goal of the HNRS 261 Honors College Connects class is "to work with nonprofit partners to solve some kind of strategic question that the nonprofit has."</p> <p>Some of these questions can take multiple weeks or months of brainpower and teamwork to tackle, but the Hackathon sought to tackle something different. Rather than taking a whole semester, the Hackathon gave one day to solving smaller topics. </p> <p>In addition to creating a space to solve these smaller topics, the event reached students who are not able to participate in the semester-long HCC classroom experience. Brandon Roca, another student leader, noted that, “as a leadership team we saw a need for [these] students to get more involved and see what human centered design is all about.”   </p> <p>Drawing on the multidisciplinary strengths of the Honors College's learning community, HCC is able to take on projects that do not fit neatly in a single discipline or field. Fortson says of this that “many of these problems aren’t in the realm of something a government major or a biology major would focus on… so having all these different multidisciplinary students brings a lot of different perspectives in terms of what we should do, how we should do it, why it would work, why it wouldn’t work.” </p> <p>The morning of the Hackathon, students had four hours to rapidly respond to the issues the four nonprofits faced. The nonprofits featured in Fall 2021 were <a href="http://facetscares.org/">FACETS</a>, <a href="https://datatrans.org">Dulles Area Transportation Association (DATA)</a>, <a href="https://www.thestarfishchange.org">the Starfish Foundation</a>, and <a href="https://vetsfwd.org">Veterans Moving Forward</a>. FACETS serves individuals and families who are homeless, low-income, or at-risk in Fairfax County, especially in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; DATA finds solutions to transportation issues faced in the Dulles area and promotes sustainable transportation options; the Starfish Foundation provides means for at-risk Ecuadorian youth to achieve post-secondary education and strives to empower these students; and Veterans Moving Forward provides service dogs and canine therapy services to veterans with physical and/or mental health challenges at no cost to the veteran.</p> <p>Roca remarked that the rapid-fire format of a Hackathon gave the nonprofit partners chances to benefit by the "multiple perspectives" that Honors College students bring to the table. At the event, students helped the nonprofits with a range of changes, including logo design, public relations, outreach to different demographics, and evaluation of innovative programs.</p> <p>The impact of the Hackathon was significant. The nonprofits involved were able to take the student-designed ideas and apply them to their own operations. Fortson noted that her favorite part of the Hackathon was watching the lively energy of the event, which was characterized by students running around and solving problems, resulting in amazing, fully-developed ideas that came from that chaos in a very short period of time.  </p> <p>Roca says that the HCC class will spend the rest of the semester working on some bigger projects for these same nonprofits - the kind that are not solved in a day. Honors College Connects plans to offer a Hackathon each Fall semester moving forward, extending the reach of the program and encouraging students who are not in the Honors College Connects classes to make an impact. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1201" hreflang="en">Hackathon</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/81" hreflang="en">Honors College</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/801" hreflang="en">The MIX</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1411" hreflang="en">Horizon Hall</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 16 Nov 2021 15:56:51 +0000 Daniel Hyunbin Chung 1641 at https://honorscollege.gmu.edu
