From among the candidates invited to be part of the Honors College, a small cadre of the most outstanding students are selected as University Scholars, Mason’s highest academic distinction. Scholars are generally ranked at the very top of their classes and demonstrate accomplishments in both service and leadership.

The University Scholars Scholarship is applied directly to tuition and fee costs.

Fall 2010 In State Award $8,300 per year $33,200 for four years
Fall 2010 Out of State Award $25,500 per year $102,000 for four years

Other scholarships, merit and need-based, may also be applied to the student’s costs.

The Honors College application is part of the application to George Mason University. To apply, select the Honors and Scholars Program Application box and complete the additional essay.

University Scholars are expected to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher throughout their academic career at Mason.

There are approximately 100 University Scholars, with each class averaging about 25 students.

University Scholars are expected to take advantage of the challenges and opportunities available in the Honors Curriculum.  Honors advising is always available to the University Scholars whether or not they choose the Curriculum.

Freshman Scholars are part of an active living and learning community in Eastern Shore, the Honors College Residence, which includes spacious study and common areas and private suites.

Along with the opportunity for excellent advising in the Honors College, the Scholars are also personally guided by the Scholars Program Director.  Scholars have priority registration after their first semester at Mason. Scholars register for their first semester before all other incoming students. Thereafter, Scholars register with the first group of students to register.

New Scholars enroll in a special section of University 100,  a one-semester course designed to help freshmen make a successful transition to life at George Mason University. The course is taught by the Scholars Program Director and upper class Scholars who act as Peer Advisors.

Community: University Scholars are a diverse, motivated, and talented group of outstanding students.  The University Scholars Community provides a network you can depend on in all your future pursuits – friends who will support your efforts, and celebrate your success!

Guidance: Along with the opportunity for excellent advising in the Honors College, Scholars are also personally guided by the Scholars Program Director.

Mentors: Each freshman Scholar is paired with an upper class Scholar. These mentors help the freshmen with any concerns they may have and act as a resource for new Scholars.

Events: Scholars engage in a variety of programs that promote public service, campuswide programming, and civic engagement. Many social and extra- or co-curricular activates are also planned.
