How to Apply
To be considered for admission to the Honors College curriculum and/or the University Scholars Program, you must submit your freshman online Mason application no later than November 1. Within the online Mason application, you will have the option of indicating your interest in one or both programs by checking a box.
You must submit a supplemental essay as prompted within the application. Essay topic can be found in the online application, and should be 500 – 700 words. Please include a word count at the end of your essay.
In addition to the required essay, we strongly recommend that applicants submit the following:
*Please note: if you are already submitting these documents as a part of your online application to Mason, you do not have to submit additional copies to the Honors College. Applications are reviewed within the same online system.
All applicants are reviewed holistically, taking into consideration the following: rigor of your high school coursework, your GPA, your class rank, your test scores (if submitted), your response to the required supplemental essay, your demonstration of commitment to community service and leadership and any other information provided in your application.
Admissions to the Honors College curriculum and University Scholars program is competitive and the standards may vary from year to year, varying with the applicant pool. There is not minimum GPA or test score required.
Late applications (submitted after the November 1 priority deadline) are typically considered, but on a space-available basis.
If accepted to the Honors College and/or the University Scholars, you will be notified via mail. This mailed notification will be sent separately from your admissions decision to the university. If you applied by the November 1 deadline, you can expect to receive the Honors College notification no later than mid-late January, and the University Scholars notification no later than early February. Only students invited to the program will receive notification. If you apply late, those decisions are sent on a rolling basis through April 1.
The Honors College accepts appeals from denied students, on a space-available basis. To appeal your decision, please carefully read and complete the Honors College Appeals Form: http://admissions.gmu.edu/documents/honorsAppealForm.pdf . Note that all required documents must be submitted no later than April 1, 2014. Appeals completed after April 1, 2014 will not be considered.
